The South African on board flight 447 has been identified as Erich Heine, 41. Erich, an executive with ThyssenKrupp AG, was in Brazil to head the German steel giant’s unit in Brazil, Companhia Siderugica do Atlantic, which is set to start operations in December.

His brother, Neil, told a talk radio show that Erich the authorities had confirmed that he was on the plane. Erich had a South African and German passport because he had been working in Germany for 3 years. “It is very difficult at this stage. The family are just trying to regroup. He’s a father of three. His eldest is five – actually turning six in a week – and he’s got four-year-old twins,” said Neil.

Colleagues lauded Erich as a phenomenal manager and brilliant engineer who rose through the steel industry.
Heine started his career at Iscor, which later became known as ArcelorMittai SA. He worked himself up to the general manager position. Heine joined ThyssenKrupp 3 years ago as head of its steel operations.

Alet Heine, Erich Heine’s wife has not given hope. “I am tired of thinking. There is still no news but I’ve seen on CNN that debris had been found. We are still hoping”, she said.

His family has been living in Rio de Janeiro for the past year.

ThyssenKrupp has issued a press release regarding the loss of Erich Heine

Erich Heine, born in South Africa in 1967, studied engineering and business administration. He began his professional career in 1991 at the South African steel company Iscor Ltd. In 1999 he spent a year with BHP Billiton as marketing manager before being appointed General Manager of Iscor’s Newcastle plant. After Iscor became Mittal Steel South Africa, he was appointed General Manager of the Vanderbijlpark plant. On February 1, 2006 Erich Heine joined the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp Steel AG with responsibility for the Steelmaking business unit. From 2007 he was also responsible for the construction of the two steel plants in Rio de Janeiro and in Alabama, a task he handled with great success. “In Erich Heine we are losing an esteemed colleague who did outstanding work for the ThyssenKrupp Group. Our thoughts are with his family at this time of great sadness,” said Dr. Ekkehard Schulz, Chairman of the Executive Board of ThyssenKrupp AG. Erich Heine leaves a wife and three small children.
