Brazilian divers have recovered a section of the tail emblazoned with the unique red and blue stripes of the Air France logo. Finding this important piece of the aircraft may help investigators narrow the search field for the plane’s data and voice recorders.
The flight recorders, which represents the investigators’ best chance at determining what brought down the Airbus A330-200, is generally kept in the tail section of the aircraft.
The Brazilian military also lowered its count of the number of bodies that was recovered from 17 to 16.
Photographs released by the Brazilian military showed a team of divers and sailors on a rubber dinghy tying a rope around what appears to be the vertical stabilizer from the tail section of the plane. The part recovered contained no evident burn marks and retained its triangular shape.
Another picture released by the military of the recovered debris showed chunks of orange, white and cream colored wreckage along with wires and crushed tubes.
